Layers

In response to the dominant theories of behaviorism and psychoanalysis a group of  psychologistis in the  60's developed  the humanistic theory of psychology. This view of people included the importance of one's subjective experiences and desire for self-actuallization. The early humanistic psychologists, including Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow, described the "layers" of the human experience. Check out this youtube video clip from the original movie, Shrek. Here Shrek talks about layers and the stories that interfere with our abiltiy to see clearly and experience others accurately.
Have fun.

Thanks Elena for the post and sharing the Shrek clip.

As I reflected on your post, I recalled a Maslow post I read on a business blog (link below)

The key take away for me was "we cannot reach the top of the pyramid if we do not keep our fear in check." Sometimes the mind sure jumbles the layers.
