Getting out of your own way

I was doing some reading on the subject of "letting go" and came across this very poignant 1974 Inaugural Speech,  given by Nelson Mandela, but originally written by Marianne Williamson. It really resonated with me, so I thought I'd share it with the group.   --- Debra

Our deepest fear is NOT that
we are inadequate,
our deepest fear is
that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light not our darkness
that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be
brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?

Actually. who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the World.
There is nothing enlightened about
shrinking so that other people
won’t feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest
the glory of God that is within us.
Its not just in some of us, it’s in everyone;
and as we let our light shine,
we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.

As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.

Debra, thank you for sharing and I should let it go ;) I don't want to add to any posting issues :) I know the feeling - and determined to post more, yet it can be intimidating to post.

But this quote is a favorite that I first heard credited to Marianne Williamson...

So when I read your post 1974...made me pause. And even made me think Marianne Williamson ripped off Mandela, but in the internet world... sure enough... you can find anything.

On this link below, it quotes Williamson and notes that they are her words incorrectly credited to Mandela via the internet...
included it has a link to the 1994 speech. http://skdesigns.com/internet/articles/quotes/williamson/our_deepest_fear/

I also found this from Mandela's org http://www.nelsonmandela.org/index.php/news/article/deepest_fear_quote_not_mr_mandelas/

It's also borrowed, and not credited to Williamson, in the movie Coach Carter...

All that fact checking aside (please forgive me - I am an English teacher).

It's message also resonated deeply with me. I think we all play small at times... I know I do when I don't speak up and avoid confrontation etc.

I first heard it at a Baron Baptiste boot camp - it was powerful - even liberating.

And rereading it tonight, reminded me again of my epiphany of how fear driven I was, and yes, reminded how I still am - as a father now, so many new fears.

But again, it's a letting go process - an awareness process. remembering and letting go...

The letting go is everything - in acknowledging fear - it brings light to the darkness - and it loses power. Then we find true power in simply being...ourselves.

SO THANK YOU for sharing this Deb - I needed to hear it tonight! I should post it to my fridge too. Maybe we all should...

And forgive me for being the stickler - giving Marianne Williamson credit where it is due :) I just remembered my mom gave me a copy of her book A RETURN TO LOVE - it's good. I think I'll go find it!

Namaste,
Kevin
